Permaculture Landscape Design and Instruction

Paige Payne – Owner of Online Landscape Designs, Permaculture Designer, and Teacher at Women’s Permaculture Guild.

As a landscape designer that cares about sustainability, permaculture is the foundation for many of my projects. And I also believe in empowering people to become part of the solution themselves. That is why I teach permaculture with the Permaculture Women’s Guild. This online course draws from the knowledge of over 40 women from around the world with each offering mentorship to students online. As a mentor with this program I use my 20+ years of experience in the landscape industry to help my students design, implement, and maintain permaculture projects.

What is permaculture?

Permaculture encompasses both larger principles and practical solutions in an approach to design that works with nature. If we look at natural systems, we see resiliency, connections, and diversity. Similarly, each element of a permaculture design influences the next in abundant, functional, closed loop systems. Permaculture design not only encourages healthy relationships between humans, insects, plants, wildlife, soil, food, and the environment — it also teaches people to take care of each other and the Earth by creating a legacy that helps leave the world a better place.  In practical terms, permaculture doesn’t just mean homesteading with animals and growing organic vegetables — it means looking at how each component in a landscape is connected and works together as a sustainable whole.

What are the benefits of permaculture?

Some common benefits of permaculture include:
  • The ability to grow your own healthy and organic food.
  • Reuse of available resources on your site turns waste into abundance. Save time, save money, and reduce waste!
  • Design and create outdoor spaces that are healthy, functional, and economical for humans, animals, plants, insects, and the Earth.
  • Increase meaningful connections with friends, family, community, and the land.
  • Support species diversity and preservation.
  • Build creative and efficient structures out of local sustainable materials
  • Create unique designs that allow you to interact with your outdoor space and understand your local ecosystem in more depth.
  • Get outside and enjoy nature!
